Glossary of Terms

This Glossary is intended briefly explain many of the terms used on this Web site. More detailed descriptions of items such as Average Temperature can normally be found in the site content.

Average Temperature - Temperature measurement position, at geometric center of product.

Bottle Washer - Machine for cleaning high volumes of bottles via a system of chemical immersion and high pressure jetting. Also known as Bottle Cleaner, Soaker.

Caustic Solution - Sodium Chloride solution, typically 2.5 to 3.5% concentration in water, used for cleaning bottles.

Caustic Immersion Time - Time during which bottles are immersed in Caustic Solution.

Carrier - Device used to carry the Pockets which contain the bottles through the Bottle Washer. The Carriers are strung at regular intervals between the Main Chain going through the Bottle Washer and can carry from 36 to 88 Pockets each.

Cold Spot Temperature - Temperature measurement position, at a position close to the base of the product. It is the last part of the product to change temperature as it is positioned in an area of little, if any, convection.

Cooler - Similar machine to a Pasteurizer but intended to cool down incoming products, typically Hot Fill food items.

Dip Tank - The first immersion tank of a Bottle Washer is sometimes plain water. This allows mud and general debris to be washed off without using expensive Caustic Solution.

Flash Pasteurization - Method of Pasteurizing the beer or beverage in bulk prior to filling the container. Involves the direct use of Heat Exchangers for heating and cooling product.

Heat Exchanger - Means of heating or cooling liquid. Pasteurizer typically Plate Heat exchanger water/steam, Bottle Washer typically submerged coils Caustic Solution/Steam. Cooling sometimes employs a water/Glycol energy exchange.

High Volume Label Removal (HVLR) - Using very large rates of flow at low pressure within the Bottle Washer immersion tanks to ensure that all labels and debris removed from the bottle remains in suspension for easy removal.

Hot Fill - Food industry term used when containers are filled at process temperature, hot, to ensure continued sterility of the container and product during and after the fill process.

HVLR - See High Volume Label Removal.

Immersion Time - Time during which the bottle going through the Bottle Washer is actually immersed in any liquid Caustic or otherwise.

Main Chain - Roller chain used to transfer the Carriers through the Bottle Washer.

Conveying Belt - Plastic or composite belt used to convey product through the Tunnel Pasteurizer.

Mixed Average Temperature - Normally a food industry term, temperature of product measured after mixing.

Pasteuriser - European spelling for Pasteurizer.

Pasteurizer - Device for pasteurizing product. Pasteurizing is performed to extend the shelf life of product with minimal impact on flavor. This operation is carried out by heating the beer or beverage - holding it for a prescribed time within a temperature range and then cooling it to a level applicable to the next part of the process. The Time-Temperature curve can be described in terms of PU accumulation.

Pasteurization Unit (PU) - A non-linear measurement of time and temperature which reflects the kill rate of the bacteria within the product.

1 minute @ 46 deg C (115 deg F) = 0.01 PU
1 minute @ 53 deg C (127 deg F) = 0.10 PU
1 minute @ 60 deg C (140 deg F) = 1.00 PU
1 minute @ 67 deg C (153 deg F) = 10.0 PU
1 minute @ 74 deg C (165 deg F) = 100.0 PU

PLC - Process Logic Controller, used to control the operation of all Pasteurizers and Bottle Washers.

PU - See Pasteurization Unit.

PU Limit System - Mechanism used to control PU accumulation in any given Tunnel Pasteurizer scenario. Systems range from the very simple - effectively just temperature limiters - to the sophistication of the Barry-Wehmiller Advanced System where the Time-Temperature Curve is held in any circumstance.

Pocket - The pocket carries the bottle through the Bottle Washer. The pockets can be constructed of plastic or steel, or a composite of both. The pockets can also be described as open or closed. Open indicates that the bottle is located and held by the shoulder. Closed indicates that the bottle is located and held by the crown.

Rinser - Final part of Bottle Washer used to rinse the caustic residue from the bottles, typically carried out by a system of jets.

Rotary Loader - Loading mechanism for the Barry-Wehmiller Bottle Washer.

Separator - Mechanism whereby the labels are separated from the fluid contained within the immersion tanks. Separation is carried out by flowing the liquor containing the labels through a rotating mesh filter screen. The screen carries out the labels as it rotates while the liquor returns to the immersion tanks. See also High Volume Label Removal.

Single Heat Exchanger - A mechanism whereby a single heat exchanger is used to heat all the separate tanks of a Tunnel Pasteurizer.

Soaker - Another term for Bottle Washer.

Tank Module - The Bottle Washers and Tunnel Pasteurizers are shipped in sections known as Tank Modules.

Time-Temperature Curve - The product temperature measured against the time of its passage through the machine is often referred to as the Time-Temperature Curve.

Traveling Recorder - A device sent through a Tunnel Pasteurizer to check the Time-Temperature Curve. The device consists of a temperature probe inserted in a bottle/can, a temperature probe to record ambient temperature and a recording device which will store temperature data against time through the machine. The recorder can be interrogated live using radio transmission to download the data to a computer. More commonly, the recorder downloads data by a hard connection at the completion of its passage through the Tunnel Pasteurizer. It is also known as Traveler, Clock.

Tunnel Pasteurizer - A type of Pasteurizer that processes the product once it is already contained in a bottle or can. A mass conveying system takes the containerized product through a sequence of heating, holding and cooling water sprays to achieve the Time-Temperature Curve desired to achieve Pasteurization.

VFD - Variable Frequency Drive. The drives for the Bottle Washer and the Tunnel Pasteurizer are all of this type.

Warmer - Similar machine to a Pasteurizer but intended to heat up incoming products, typically to aid in packaging.

Wetting Agent - A chemical added to the Bottle Washer immersion tanks that will aid the Caustic Solution in attacking the labels and adhesives.

Wire Belt - A type of steel link belt used to convey product through a Tunnel Pasteurizer.
